Guidebook of the Šluknov area(Böhmisches Niederland)
ZAHRÁDKOVÁ, Hana
This piece of work is concepted as a guidebook of the Šluknov area which shows the very north headland of the Czech Republic. This area is located in the north part of the Děčín region between the Labské sandstones area and the Lužické heights. This area near the German border had been populated mainly by the German-speaking people until 1945 and it was also a part of the Sudety land. In this piece of work there is mentioned a brief historical overview of this area whose most unsettled times relate to the first half of the 20th century. The whole area is characteristic of its mutual influences of the czech, german and serbian elements. Natural centres of this area are towns Šluknov, Rumburk and Varnsdorf which are introduced in this work, too. The whole area represents a touristic potential which still waits for its utilization. This piece of work, which should have a practical orientation first of all, might contribute to the presentation of the area and might be finally used as the guidebook Besides the above mentioned topics the work presents both the former and current economy braches represented in this area and the current and intended utilization for the tourism (hiking, biking, combinations of a stay in the Czech Republic and in Germany, etc.). The work is also supplemented by legends and personalities whose names are associated with this area.
Presenting Prague: Visions of a City through Western Guidebooks
Marcella, Jordan ; Tomalová, Eliška (advisor) ; Zusi, Peter (referee) ; Vykoukal, Jiří (referee)
Over the past 30-35 years, Prague has witnessed significant changes in its government, economics, and social policies. Following the 1989 revolutions, vast swaths of Westerners were allowed to visit the Czech capital for the first time. It quickly developed into one of Europe's most visited cities, boasting millions of tourists each year. This master's thesis is a case study that aims to use English language, Western published guidebooks to determine how Prague is presented to Westerners and how that affects Western perceptions into the city. Perception is not determined by a single factor and is influenced by numerous variables. This study seeks to highlight how guidebooks contribute towards the West's perception of Prague. It analyzes 17 guidebooks published from 1994 to 2019 and uses the various descriptive elements of each. The focus is on the narratives they offer and how those narratives change over time through the use of discourse analysis. The main question of this research is to answer how Prague's presentation in guidebook has changed over time, and how this affects Western perception of the city. What do Westerners think about the city? Is Prague a quirky place that is only notable for its architecture, or is there something else alluring about the Czech capital? How does Prague fit in...

Banýrová, Michaela ; Duběda, Tomáš (advisor) ; Šotolová, Jovanka (referee)
The following bachelor thesis consists of two parts - translation of two chapters from a French book by Georges Poisson Les Maisons d'écrivain and a commentary to this translation. The text is a guidebook to the houses of French writers. In the commentary, we analyse the source text, describe the method of translation, problems we dealt with during the translation as well as translation procedures we used. Paris in the French, Czech and American tourist guidebooks (1918-1939)
Rudová, Lenka ; Ira, Jaroslav (advisor) ; Kubišová, Vlasta (referee) ; Verdier, Nicolas (referee) ; Czoch, Gábor (referee)
in English This Master's Thesis deals with guidebooks about Paris published in France, Czechoslovakia and the United States of America between the years 1918-1939. It analyses how the French capital city is presented in the guidebooks and how far the representation differs according to the country of publishing. The first two chapters deal with the modern history of tourism up until the interwar period and with the formation of major collections of guidebooks. The following chapters use a comparative perspective to analyse three major aspects of tourist guidebooks about Paris: itineraries; recommended places and monuments (the so-called "must- sees"); and global images of Paris. The analysis reveals that the country of publishing had only a limited impact on the content of the guidebooks; rather, the books largely respected established rules and patterns within the genre.
The theme of this thesis is to introduce the Vodňany region as an area suitable for cycling, which is supported by proposals of new bike routes. The first part is characterized by problems of bike paths and bike routes and the author has assessed guidebooks dealing with this region. Furthermore, the work deals with the general characteristics of the region including geo-physical and cultural-historical part. The second part is focused on current state of cycling infrastructure in the Vodňany region and proposal for new bike routes, which this touristic area could benefit from. These cycling routes differ in difficulty and mostly run along routes with minimal or no traffic and suplement the existing network of bike routes. Each route includes a route description, photographs of places of interest, map and altitude profile.
